PRIDE GUIDE 1996 GAY PEOPLE'S CHRONICLE

Cleveland festival's new location overlooks Lake Erie

Cleveland's Pride '96 festival is at a new location this year, Pier Park, overlooking Lake Erie, north of the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame. The eighth annual lesbian, gay and bisexual Pride Parade and Festival will be on June 15. Festivities will start with an 11:00 am assembly at E. 22nd and Euclid Ave., an 11:30 rally, and a noon parade to the festival site. The East 22nd assembly area is between Euclid and Prospect, next to Trinity Cathedral across from Cleveland State University.

The parade will go west on Euclid, north at East 9th St., and on to the street's end at Pier Park. The festival is free, open to the public, and runs from 12:00 to 6:00 p.m. This year's festival will be held in the cool shadows of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum. Pier Park is a brand new facility directly north of the rock hall, and adjacent to Lake Erie.

The park is a beautiful location bordered on three sides by the lake. The new location offers lots and lots of grass, a hill, park benches and landscaped planters. There will also be canopied tents providing shelter from too much sun or rain. Don't forget to bring blankets and Frisbees. The Festival features two stages, one for entertainment, the other for dancing, a vendor area with over 70 vendors on the tri-

angle, a food court, and a beer garden.

Pride is about coming together to celebrate and affirm our identities and lives as lesbians, gay men, or bisexuals. Pride allows us to literally take to the streets in political opposition to the conservative forces that would like to silence us out of existence.

The great thing about Cleveland's Pride Parade and festival is that it gives us the opportunity to do two critically important things simultaneously. First, it allows us the opportunity to participate in the democratic process by protesting in the streets and making statements attesting to the validity of our lives and our need for civil rights protections. Second, it allows us to come together through all of our diversity and affirm our humanity, love, compassion, and pride with and for one another.

But let's not forget that Pride is a festival too, and as such it has many things to offer. The Pride festival offers speakers, music, entertainment, food, vendors, and dancing. Featured performers on the entertainment stage this year include comedian Georgia Ragsdale; magician Eric Brouman; singer Anne E. DeChant; guest emcee Frances Stevens, the publisher of Curve magazine;

and many more.

In addition to the main stage there is also the dance stage with a lake shore breeze behind it and a beer garden next to it. Whether your idea of fun is dancing, shopping, being

entertained, talking politics, eating, building community solidarity, hangin' with your queer family, marching in the streets, or playing in the sun, this year's Pride Parade and Festival has got it all. ♡
